    1. Thousands of characters getting brutally mauled to death VS the scene in the beginning of Attack on Titan where a grieving mother holds on to the remaining arm of her son that got eaten by a titan.

Fast paced violence desensitizes where slow paced detailed violence and suffering always makes you feel the hurt.

“The only prospect more terrifying than a certain death is an uncertain one.” -Terry Pratchett

Disclaimer: coming from memory so may be a little off.

    4. I think it’s because visually, shootings or stabbings are portrayed as a red color change on the body. The real act is generally more gruesome, but for tv and movies they rarely go for realism outside the horror genre.

Limb breaks, on the other hand, are very visible and look like a fundamental change to the body’s shape.

    5. House of Wax, I had no problem seeing people murdered & decapitated. I drew the fucking line at someone getting their achilles heel cut.

    6. 100 people get shot in an action movie and I’m fine but one character rolls their ankle and I have to pause and collect myself

Leg breaking looks more scary. I was in a car accident a few years ago and broke my leg in two places. Ive never seen the pics my mom took of it because they said it was really bad and my mom only took those photos to scare me into never walking anywhere again which unfortunately worked. It took awhile to heal and I was couch bound for months but 3 years later its mostly all healed up except for my ankle which starts hurting bad if im on it too much or walking on really uneven ground.

You can imagine breaking your leg and it being pretty painful but it’s a little harder to imagine what getting murdered feels like

I think it’s because breaking a leg is a relatively common thing that can happen to normal people anywhere. Unless you live in a warzone, you’re probably not at risk of being lit up every day. The fact that the leg break is ‘closer to home’ makes you react more strongly. You can empathize with it better.

    10. Americans when there’s blood, gore, violence: 1st picture.

Americans when the movie has nudity: 2nd picture

A lot of people have probably broken a bone more than they’ve ever been shot or stabbed. It’s why we don’t think much of it if a character gets decapitated or something, but if there’s a scene of their nails getting pulled off that’s a more grounded pain we can imagine/empathize with easier.

    12. Broken bone scenes always hit way more real for some reason 😭 that’s the one thing that makes me physically recoil
