    1. In 1860, an 11-year-old girl named Grace Bedell wrote a letter to Abraham Lincoln during his presidential campaign suggesting he grow a beard because it would make him look better and help him get more votes. Lincoln replied to her politely, saying he had never worn whiskers before and worried people might think it looked silly.

A few weeks later, he started growing one anyway. By the time he traveled to Washington after winning the election, he had the famous beard we associate with him today. He even stopped in her town of Westfield, New York and reportedly met her to show that he had taken her advice.

    2. Meanwhile (well, a few years before):

John Brown: I’m a wanted man. I should grow a beard so that I can move with less suspicion.

Also John Brown: *grows a hedge on his chin*
