Julia Child before books, before cooking on television, before fame in Cassis, France (1950). She served in the OSS, the predecessor to the CIA, throughout WWII. Her roles ranged from research and clerical intelligence work at HQ to later assignments abroad in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and China.

She looks like she’s cooking up a CIA scheme. That’s a devious look on her face! Lol

    2. the OSS angle always gets me. she spent years doing actual intelligence work — one of her projects was helping develop shark repellent to stop sharks from triggering underwater mines. then she became famous for teaching america to cook french food. genuinly one of the most interesting lives of the 20th century

    3. I watched her documentary and she above all was a very kind hearted woman I felt.

    4. My mother worked for the State Department in the ’40s and ’50s and was in Paris after the war. She was part of the ex pat circle with Julia Child. She told stories about going to dinner at Julia’s house during those years. I think the husband was at the State Dept, too. Apparently the dinners were fabbo!

Julia and Paul are one of my favorite couples in history. They made a super interesting life for themselves. Julia is famous for telling people for decades to be “fearless” and she and Paul definitely were.
