Ngl this sounds like every funeral I’ve ever been to. Who goes to a funeral and doesn’t tell nice stories and jokes about the deceased (unless they were a colossal pos)? Funerals are for the living.Â

I went to a Quaker funeral once. The service involved everyone sitting in the meeting hall facing each other and, without any plans or structure, people would stand up as the spirit moved them to talk about what the departed person meant to them. Some were funny, some were somber, one person sang, etc. After about an hour we left the room and went next door for food and merriment.

Randomly screaming at nobody in particular sounds like mental illness.

Come to an Irish wake if you want a real party

Um…what? Most of my family is from the south, and NONE of us call it that.
We just call it a funeral like normal people.

My family does the proper Irish wake with a bunch of booze and a bbq as the memorial.

Was just at a funeral this week and you gotta be shitting yourself if you don’t think I didn’t come loaded with bits and jokes. We’re not about to stand around an be sad this person is gone let’s celebrate what this person gave to us instead. If not uncle Jim might pop out that casket with a word or two
This sounds exactly like an Irish funeral! The only way to do it 🙌

I dunno, I’m white but I lost a very good black friend and that church was *full* of folks crying their heart out. He was an extremely special and unique man. RIP Marvin.

I remember my grandfather’s. I was a bit resentful. It was like a party. I was young and I didn’t feel like anyone was as sad as me. Reiterated by the fact that his ex wives wore pastel colored pant suits to the funeral. Smh! 😂😂😂 It’s hilarious now, but I was so mad and sad back then. During the repast, I went in the bathroom to cry. Then came out and joined the festivities.

The people getting angry at the “lack of decorum” are the same people who mocked Reverend Jackson in real life, and were talking shit after his death. If they’re not in control, they throw a tantrum.

The celebration parades in NOLA are pretty neat.

Am white, but I have always appreciated this aspect of Black culture. We should be celebrating the life of our loved ones. It’s human nature to want to mourn their loss, but celebrating the time we shared with them is so much more powerful. I decided long ago that I will be having a funeral celebration.

I didn’t realize this was so unique to us until I started going to stuff for my non black husbands family. In his culture you’re encouraged to sit and stay in the grief for months, any kind of upbeat, catharsis is frowned upon. I get it but I do really appreciate our approach to death.
