But if it’s just a white canvas with a red light through it, I don’t care if it’s representing the struggle of the oppressed against their bourgoise masters in the 21st century and how that gets clamped down by the advent of modern technology as a way of dumbing down and distracting the populace while the ultra rich siphon off yet another sovereign nation’s resources just to line their pockets with their 47th yacht. It’s just a white canvas with a red line through it, and I refuse to believe it sold at auction for over $20mil fuck off.

The middle point is where you learn things like perspective and the like. Stuff that you can’t really learn just by doing.
The far right point is realizing that while theory is important, drawing for the sake of it is the only way to improve.

I studied music theory for a while and I totally agree. There are a billion tricks to help make composition easier but you definitely don’t need to understand them to write good music, nor do the listeners need to understand them to enjoy it.

I think this is a little misplaced. A lot of legendary musicians old and new have strong music theory backgrounds. Yeah it has to sound good, but if they sit down with other musicians and talk about a piece, they’ll sound like the midwit trying to describe *why* it sounds good. “Woah! I like what you did there with the little phrygian riff, that flat 2 makes it pop” or something. They just don’t try to sell music theory as sexy to the masses. Music theory is a cool and useful tool. Not always necessary, but neat, and used by many of your favorite musicians (or their writers) who make great sounding music.

It’s been a recent trend where people insist that music theory is not useful or elitist gatekeeping, but it is simply a tool at the end of the day. Understanding why something is the way it is is useful for like every skill, even if not strictly necessary
