Early concepts for the Space Shuttle used the same idea with a crewed fly-back booster. Since this was before Shuttle, I wonder if the design team was familiar with the British concept.
Unfortunately, budget cuts after Apollo forced the Shuttle design team to abandon those concepts in favor of the cheaper disposable center tank and solid rocket boosters.
