Kriegsmarine naval personnel operating U-boats along the Norwegian coast often relied on supplies from local fishermen and civilians. Resistance members from Norway sometimes exploited this by contaminating food supplies, including canned fish, with laxatives.
The goal was not to poison the crews, but to incapacitate them. A submarine crew suffering from severe gastrointestinal distress in the cramped environment of a submarine could render the vessel temporarily ineffective without a single shot being fired.
In the broader context of the Battle of the Atlantic, even minor disruptions could contribute to reducing the operational effectiveness of Germany’s submarine fleet.

Doesn’t this meme kind of imply that the US and Britain stood by and watched while Norwegians did the heavy lifting? Not to take anything away from these efforts or their effectiveness but this meme doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I wonder if U-1206 went down due to this. If so needs to be a slightly larger train in picture.

Not pictured: the Canadian navy, which ended up as the 3rd largest navy in the world, because of their escort work.

Always love the small details of sabotage that get hidden throughout history. Though most the things can be arguable if they really had much effect but always cool to know about all the other ways in war people can mess with their enemies without actual combat.

Every little bit helps.
Sometimes I think about all the poor people who were kidnapped from their villages and used as forced labor, the little acts of sabotage they did must have added up in a serous way. I can’t help but think so many of the mechanical failures etc. that plagued the Germans were partially their responsibility. They took such great risks never to know if their acts of defiance paid off.

Fun fact
Norway had the 1st or 2nd largest merchant fleet prior to the war, after the fall of the country the major part of the merchant fleet was used by the Allies crewed by Norwegian sailors, the fleet was able to feed Britain for most of the Blitz and was critical for the war effort
It’s funny how we forget small nation in ww2 when they played crucial role like this

Unrelated, but they’re finding a lot of foreign objects in the toilets of that aircraft carrier, right now. *ahem*

Well, actually it is more potent than you think.
Toilets at U-boats were faulty and infamous(check U-1206 accident). This forced U-boats to surface more frequent and be in the radar of Allied forces.

Norway also had one of the largest Merchant Navy fleets that majorly helped to keep Britain and the Allies continually resupplied and help us stay in the war against the Axis powers.
Oslo sends a Christmas tree to London each year which is put up in Trafalgar Square and has been a tradition since 1947. It was a token of thanks from Norway to the UK for all the help and cooperation between the two nations throughout the Second World War.

Not only Europe, but the whole world was full of these acts of righetous defiance against tyranny.
Here in Brazil, we have the Brazilian diplomat Luís Martins de Souza Dantas. He issued visas in occupied France against the orders of his own government, helping hundreds of Jews escape the Holocaust.
He was eventually recognized decades later by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among the Nations, a title given to non-Jews who saved Jews during the Holocaust.
