In 1182, Andronikos overthrew Maria of Antioch, the regent of his nephew Alexios II Komnenos, and took over the regency. The following year, Andronikos murdered Alexios, proclaimed himself emperor, married Alexios' 12 year old wife Agnes of France), and consummated the marriage, something unacceptable even at the time.

Andronikos violently purged the nobility, destroying the Komnenian system created by his predecessors. He was eventually overthrown and brutally killed, but the damage was done, significantly weakening the Eastern Roman Empire and setting the stage for the sack of Constantinople in 1204.
