We are very aware and very vocal about it being stupid.

Now explain to the average British person that Sean Bean and a plucky Irishman didn’t single handedly defeat the French.

Literally the on;y thing Americans know about Vietnam war is that the US lost. We barely even learn about the origins just that we lost…
*Guys read thru the comments before letting me know you studied this topic in high school.

That’s basically the first thing Americans learn about the Vietnam War

Oh we know, trust me
Granted there’s a McDonald’s in Hanoi, so in spirit you can say we won

I guess that fits the cliche of the smug European looking down on Americans while not actually being any better informed (there were two Vietnams- North Vietnam won, South Vietnam lost).

Every single American knows the US lost Vietnam. It was a massive deal and US involvement had massively destabilizing impact on American society, to the extent that it’s impossible to ignore or lie about.

I’m not american, but like 90% of the war cinema in the 80s-90s is about how hard they lost in Vietnam, I guess they know it
Tall-Log-1955 on
Yes OP americans are dumb and undereducated but the one thing we know about Vietnam is that we lost.
If you want to make a meme about dumb americans it should be about the dumb idea that the US nuked Japan to intimidate the USSR.

Do you guys genuinely believe this shit about US history courses or are you just making up stuff

Technically, Vietnam won…and lost.

The joke is that Europeans think Americans weren’t taught that and are being stupid right

Really? I can go to just about any person in this country and ask them who won in Vietnam and 90% of the time they will either say the U.S. lost or at the least we gave up and the Vietcong won against the south a few years later.

The American defeat in Vietnam was more of a loss of political will to fight

It is true that the United States did not win the Vietnam War.
The United States did not lose to the NVA or Vietcong.
The United States lost at home to growing civil unrest.

America has a bizarre fascination with sending young men to fight wars according to rules of engagement that make victory literally impossible.
