My father grew up poor in rural Maine. He joined the Navy right after he graduated high school in 1941. I asked him one time what, at that point, did he like the most about being a sailor. He said “Three squares a day.” And he wasn’t kidding.

Well if there was one thing the U.S. was good at it was logistics, they had friggin’ [ice cream ships](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream_barge)!
They must’ve got the good shit in WW2, because nothing looked that good in the 90s Army mess halls.
