The gaming commissions have been regulating slot machines for over 50 years and it’s only become easier with the integration of computer-controlled payout distributions. These payout distributions must be within a certain range by law—obviously tending toward the house winning, but within at least a colorable argument of reason or whatever. Events likes these happen and it’s the reason that words like “machine malfunction voids all payouts” are quite liberally distributed over and around the machines. I’m not a fan of casinos, so I very rarely enter one. It’s the only way to guarantee that you don’t lose money, which is the expected outcome mathematically. These circumstances sucks emotionally but trying to argue against a forensic investigation into the conditions leading to payout is like a sovereign citizens arguing against the tax code. It’s not just a casino saying “nah we won’t pay you”. They pay out all the time because if they follow the rules and laws they are guaranteed to make tons of money. All of this is well-settled and has been for a long time and should be anticipated as a possibility in advance of gambling.

I’m relieved to find it was actually just late stage capitalism instead

It was in fact a malfunction. She didn’t win any jackpot on the machine, as her winning amount was $2.25. she likely pressed cash out and the pop up on machine said $43mil. And That machine has a max payout of $6500. Now I do understand why she’s upset though. If I saw that number I’d have a panic attack and be equally devestated when they tell me it’s a malfunction, even though I know I didn’t hit any jackpots

What did she win? This happened years ago if I remember correctly. She sued, but did she actually win anything?

IMO, as long as the casino is open and the equipment is allowed to be use, any malfunctions are at the casinos fault and no one elses.

As many have pointed out, it was clearly a malfunction. However, for those saying they would have felt cheated or been upset, consider this: If you saw a $100 bill, went to pick it up, but the wind snatched it away into a sewer grate or somewhere you couldn’t reach it, would you say, “I lost $100 today”?

if the Casino can check the logs for malfunction everytime a slot machine hits a jackpot, I should be able to request a log check everytime I lose. Afterall, it might be malfunctioning.

When someone says lawyer up fast, you know the situation already went way past damage control. Hope she gets good advice before it spirals further.
$43 million on a slot machine sounds like a malfunction
Yikes, yeah this feels way above handle it yourself territory. Lawyer up and let professionals deal with it.
Scumbags gonna scumbag.
I hope she gets the $43 mil win and another $43 mil in punitive if she has to beat their deadbeat ass in court.
