This is the way

      Lesson from Hungary:

Authoritarian leader comes to power and does his authoritarian schtick, supported actively by the far right in the U.S.

Opposition unites around former member of the Authoritarian Leader’s party, who left the party and his marriage (after the party had pardoned officials for covering up child sex abuse).

Now, in one week: liberals, communists, greens, joke parties, religious conservatives, are going to unite around the candidate to unseat the authoritarian leader from power.

If Newsom is the nominee, for sure. But now is exactly the time for people to be discussing if they want Newsom as the nominee or not, rather than just accepting he will be flaws and all.

Personally I wanna see Kelly as the guy. Still think he should have been Harris’ VP pick.

    3. Every election is the same. Republicans run pure evil as the candidate and the Democrats run someone slightly less evil who doesn’t even punish the Republicans for the crimes they did. Every time. If Gavin gets nominated, this cycle will repeat. He’s been platforming Kirk, Bannon and Shapiro on his podcast and even agreeing with some of their evil policies such as anti-trans rhetoric and anti-homelessness. But sure whatever, y’all are eager to concede to the Democratic Party’s status quo every time.

    4. I’m not enthusiastic for Newsom. TBH I’d rather he wasn’t the candidate but until we get a Democrat in office who does even 10% of the bullshit Republicans pull when in power I’ll keep voting Blue. I understand a Newsom presidency wont give us Single Payer Healthcare. Wont stop funding Isreal. Wont really provide any real change. At this point we just need someone who isn’t openly fucking kids and gaslighting people about it.

    5. Y’all preemptively put yourselves in this little box, and then come elections you say “Oh no, we had no other choice!”

What you don’t have is any goddamn imagination.

    6. While I will commit to the nominee the reality is another establishment dem won’t energize the base. We can try to coast on “we are not the other guy,” and it will probably be more of a motivator this time around, but it will show once again they dont care about us. Newsom is not the man for the moment and you better believe he’s not the guy you want in your corner when the GOP unleashes all the fuckery they have planned.

    7. Shit like this is why minorities don’t trust you. There’s not a red line you won’t cross in the name of “electability”.

If Newsom is the Dem candidate, he will lose. He is extremely unpopular with leftists because he is an anti-LGBT, anti-homless, anti-worker candidate.

If he gets that far, liberals have thrown the election away.

    9. Ok sure. But why are we talking about Newsom being the nominee two years from the election?

The establishment is already scheming to get people to settle by using fear tactics.

    10. corsicanbandit on

Republicans sold their soul and their values down the river to get their candidate in office and it works for them all the time.

    11. Are we in primary season? Did I miss the vote? Now is the time to challenge people vying for power and making them stay clear on who they are working for.
Say all you want about Gavin and stop defending him like he is heir apparent

    12. BlackStarBlues on

Tiffy is getting ahead of herself. She might do better to bust her “fat ass” to get the best possible candidate through the primary (and so many other milestones before that) before committing to GOP-lite Newsom…

    13. TheSilverNoble on

If you want real change, the time to push for it is not in the middle of an election. In my opinion, it’s a bit like telling someone who’s having a heart attack that they’ll be fine if they eat better. That’s probably true, but it’s also not the right way to solve the immediate problem.

    14. I will absolutely vote for my ethics and morals in the Primary. If forced, I will support the neoliberal corporate “White Moderate” Democrat in the Presidential election but I’d rather not.

    15. well, just wait and see if they try to run kamala again and see the downlow racist liberals suddeny worry about all the same dumb stuff they did last time

    16. “Quit complaining and vote for us, look at the alternative” isn’t going to get people to vote the way you want. Why haven’t Dems learned this yet? You can get mad about it or learn to play the game better. Maga did.

    17. i don’t like newsom, in fact i hate his bitchass. his twitter fights on trump are amusing and i wish more Dems went that hard. we can find better alternatives to someone who sits with ben shapiro and doesn’t call him a rat fuck virulent racist to his face

that said, if he wins I’m donating, I’m canvassing, I’m volunteering, literally anything to make sure epstein nazi backed trump allies dont win again.

    18. aboysmokingintherain on

This is fine. But let’s now take the time to dissect and debate Newsom. Dude is not the nominee as of now and hasn’t even debated anyone outside of right wingers who walk over him.

    19. NarcissisticDramaQwn on

Ooor we could put someone up who actually embodies the ideals we want instead of a Republican with a D next to their name…. Just throwing that out there.

    20. Newsom is against the CA billionaire tax. He’s been photographed smiling as homeless encampments are cleared out. He cedes dumb positions to jackasses like Charlie Kirk and Ben Shapiro on his podcast. He doesn’t give a fuck about the southern half of the state he governs, yet we’re supposed to believe he’ll be a good candidate for us?!

The political parties are now oligarchs for the GOP, corporations for the Dems. While what the US needs is politicians for regular people. Newsom isn’t that, same as any GOP candidate.

The talk of Newsom being the assumptive candidate is gross, stupid, and ignores the problems as to why both political parties have such low approval ratings. We can and should do better.

    21. My personal policy preferences are so far left that typing them here would get me put on a list.

Also, if the nominee is one of Nancy Pelosi’s old gym socks, I’m knocking on doors for Gym Sock ’28.

    22. Fight the good fight in the primaries.

And by that I mean do your best to present the arguments for voting for the person you want, as opposed to winning by tearing the other candidate down.

Toxicity breeds contempt which breeds hatred which leads to Republicans winning elections they shouldn’t.

    23. per usual I will vote for the most progressive person in the primary and then I will put absolutely everything into the general election regardless.

I don’t live in a perfect world with perfect humans so I’m going to vote for the candidate that gets me closest to my goal.

    24. Justin_General on

There are too many terminally online liberals that want to start at the finish line with candidates. Newsom isn’t great, but he’s not spineless like other Democrats, vote for him if you have to, push for a better candidate until then but vote for him if it comes to it because If/when Democrats get back into power they’re going to pull some “we need to heal and not divide the nation” BS and no one in the current administration will face any consequences for what they are doing. We need to stop voting for them and vote for the candidates who will push back against Republicans. Maybe that’s Newsom, maybe that’s a better candidate but we can’t take our ball and go home like so many did with Harris.

    25. Now is the time to critisize Newsom if you don’t want him. Get it all out before the primary elections. And then if he wins, you need to vote for him. What’s going on right now is what happens when democrat voters decide punishing democrats is more important than keeping the GOP out of power.

    26. Can’t wait till some dumbass dems don’t vote for him just to protest some dumbass thing like “he didn’t do enough against ICE” or something.

    27. Pledging 3 years in advance to vote for someone without knowing any of their policies or even that they’re going to be the nominee at all. Wow. I guess the concept of “vote for the person who is promising policy that we want” is a thing of the past huh.

This whole militant “vote blue no matter who” mindset enables the Democratic Party to offer us nothing because they know people will just vote for them anyway because they’re not Magats.

It can’t just be about “lesser evil voting” any more. That didn’t fucking work in 2024 and it BARELY worked in 2020.

People need to be excited about who they’re voting for, not just who they’re voting against. This mentality will doom us.

    28. GingerSnapSurprise on

I mean fine, but fuck Newsom. He’a not the candidate yet, so stop acting like he is. People like Newsom and the two party system are a large part of the reason we’re in this shit show.

If you put a gun to my head and truly it’s Newsom vs a GOP ghoul, fine. But bet your ass that’s the last resort.

    29. “It puts the Democrat in office or it gets the Republican again.”

No, white people act like that whenever there’s a black or a female candidate. Objectively. We have sources. The last two elections that Trump won. I don’t wanna hear this shit from anyone anymore.

You all had your chance to vote for the most qualified candidate last year and you all either shit the bed, didn’t vote, voted third-party, or did some sort of cowardly protest vote.

Downvote me and block me all you want but fuck anyone in this sub who believes in this shit. You all pick the stupidest times to start getting all democratic. Why couldn’t you have this fucking energy in November 2024?

I’m white and you people piss me off.

    31. Don’t let them push the ‘wait till the election’ narrative … Politicians in countries across the world are sacking/forcing them to resign, so why are American supposed to endure more of this criminal?

He needs to go NOW not in a few years

    32. Dinklerbuuuurf on

Gavin Newsom is the billionaire’s pick and that is why people don’t like him. He seems good enough to fool people but behind closed doors he doesn’t put through meaningful policy for the working class.

Dems need a democratic socialist that will push policy that benefits the masses not 7,8,9 figure voters.

    33. If Newsom is the nominee, yeah, I’ll vote for him. But fuck Democrats for consistently putting up candidates that are only marginally better than the opposition. Fuck Democrats for not giving the people, their voters, the candidates they actually want.

I just wanna vote *for* someone, not *against* somebody else. Get your shit together, Democrats.
