My wife ran cross country in high school in south-east New Mexico. In late summer/early fall, you would see hundreds of these on the road, particularly after a rainstorm. To this day, she vividly remembers the sound and feel of the crunch from stepping on them while she ran.

I was absolutely terrified of the grasshoppers in “A bug’s life”. I’m not particularly scared of bugs, but the grasshoppers seemed so genuinely evil and scary in that movie.
