I always hate when a successor to a king immediately just gives the nobles everything they want. In most cases it goes against what the predecessor did.

It’s funnier when it all happens with one monarch, like e.g. Poland’s Bolesław III, really great ruller… Until he decided to implement one of the worst succession systems plunging state into de facto 200 years of civil war.
Literally undermined all his lifework on a deathbed.

Not just Europe.
Saladin: Hero of the Crusades. Defender of the Holy Lands.
His dipshit son Aziz: The guy who tried to dismantle the pyramids brick by brick

Have there been any dictators or kings that overall been a positive and liked by the people?

Reading Byzantine history put you in the cycle of “how could they fuck this up this badly?” and “How the fuck did they bounce back from that?”.

Well, it does not relate to Europe only, but everywhere. Even in a family, a competent person assumes the reins and enhance the financial and social position of such family. Sometime later, after the departure of the person (or his descendant), another one arrives, who destroys everything the competent person built and bring ruin upon the family.
