“Banquet of the Mutilated Faces”: a charity dinner for veterans injured in the face during World War l. The veterans were often socially ostracized due to their horrific looks.

    2. Wars often advance technology out of necessity. Battlefield medicine in WWI had advanced which resulted in soldiers surviving injuries that would have been more likely fatal in previous conflicts. But that led to more veterans with facial disfigurement like these men. The field of plastic surgery also advanced as these men needed help looking closer to normal as they reintegrated into society.
