Are Cane Corso’s replacing pit breeds as a way to avoid breed restrictions, or did I miss something regarding their increased popularity?
Those are not beginner dogs, and there is one in my neighborhood that has to be muzzled and restrained by two people sometimes on walks because that particular dog wants to kill every other dog it sees. It’s terrifying.
Curious to know what’s driving that sharp rise in popularity.
Eta: all those poor French bulldogs 😢I hope they start allowing better breed standards that let those poor dogs breath.

Great Danes being at 21 amazes me, they’re not very popular at all in the UK these days.

I’m surprised whippet makes the list (barely). I’m not American, but I had a whippet growing up and I always have to explain to people what it is (like a smaller greyhound is my go to).
I am surprised that a breed with major health issues is the most popular dog. I can hear them wheezing from a mile away on walks.

Why there is no legend for grey?

Australian Shepherds being that high is a little surprising. So much energy.

I’m hating the color format.

Since the source is AKC, we don’t get mutts, or even deliberately mixed breeds like labradoodles, so the picture here is somewhat skewed.

Surprised that border collies aren’t all that high; in Europe they’re among the most common breeds.

I hope PWDs never catch on. I love these dogs.

Surprised that both Weimeraner and Vizsla are not that popular.

Americans and choosing intentional cruelty (inability to drink and breathe) – what a shocker.

As a veterinarian doing CTs and MRIs I see french bulldogs all the time – but I guess I’d see them all the time even if they were the 50º most popular breed.

French Bulldogs?
Since 2014 breeding rules have gotten strict in The Netherlands effectively banning the breeding of flat nosed French Bulldogs because of the many health issues associated with it. Now they’re trying to breed healthier bulldogs.
Flat nosed French Bulldogs are the result of human animal abuse. I fear many are among them in that rising graph.

Maybe Cane Corsos are becoming so popular because of all the negative publicity surrounding Pit Bulls, XL Bullies, and such like. Lots of people seem to want a “hard” dog, for reasons that I will never understand, and Cane Corsos have been relatively unknown outside Italy so they don’t get the same bad press (yet) and you don’t get judged in the same way by your friends and family (yet).
What’s the deal with weimaraners dropping in popularity? They’re pretty much the same thing as a Vizsla in a different coat and slightly bigger, but the Vs stayed constant and Ws dropped off.

So this only includes purebred dogs yeah?
Don’t fret folks, the pit mixes are still holding their title [among shelter dogs](https://hartleylawtx.com/blog/most-common-shelter-dog-breeds-by-city/)

[This article from *The Guardian*](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/feb/19/the-rise-of-the-cane-corso-should-this-popular-status-dog-be-banned-in-the-uk) describes the Cane Corso as “like an XL Bully on steroids”.
Based on social media I’m surprised that the pitbull isn’t number 1
Corgis dropping off as a result of Queen Elizabeth II’s death?
Can you add pictures of some of the dogs to the chart? I had to go back and forth Googling each one.
