    1. What most people don’t realize is that this is a feature, not a bug.

Employers LOVE the lack of affordable healthcare. You will never take off work for a moderate illness because $200-$1000 plus a day of lost wages for an “excused” absence just isn’t worth it to any working-class person or family.

This leaves the employee two options:

Option 1: Unexcused absence. Now the employer has a “reason” to withold or minimize raises or benefit increases and also has a documented absence should they feel the need to replace or eliminate you. Oh, they didn’t get fired for starting a union, they have four unexcused absences!

Option 2: You come in and work anyway.

“Oh, but what if you get coworkers/customers sick?!?” Uh, lol, who cares? Airborne infections and viruses are practically impossible to trace. There is virtually no consequence to having your linecook work with the flu because anybody can get the flu anywhere. *Maybe* you got it from that restaurant, maybe you got it from Greg two cubicles down, or maybe you got it from Walmart or your kids. It’s not about what is likely or true, it is about what is financially liable. 99.99999999999999999% of the time, nobody is going to be able to prove to a court that you got the flu from any individual person or place.

Lack of universal healthcare is a tool to keep us enslaved and too sick for any motivation beyond basic survival.

    2. Incentives matter. If staying home costs me money, I’m bringing the plague to the morning meeting

    3. welcome to the american shithole where workers rights are a joke and being sick leaves you in debt.

    4. Thanks for reminding me that – despite it’s many flaws – the healthcare in my country is still way better than in the US

Lmao I remember when I worked at Red Robin and they said I needed a doctor’s note. Like cmon baby you chase us out of here at 33 hours so you don’t have to offer insurance.

    6. Y’all employers take doctors notes? I have to apply for 3-4 days minimum for sick days. Even that can be denied if the doctor doesn’t fill the forms out just right.

I mean, I get PPTO, which will cover any time off. It takes 30 hrs worked to accrue 1 hr time off, though.
