Josef Mengele drowned in a swimming accident in 1979 on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil. He was buried under the name Wolfgang Gerhard. Only in 1985 did a police investigation discover his true identity. He died without being punished for the various atrocities he committed during the Holocaust.
