The majority of the Hungarian army, defeated within just two hours at the Battle of Mohács, drowned in the marshes while fleeing. King Louis II of Hungary was among them. Following this battle, the Kingdom of Hungary officially came to an end and remained under Ottoman suzerainty for nearly two centuries.
