The Moretta (or muta) mask was a Venetian accessory from the 16th to 18th centuries, consisting of an oval piece of black velvet worn exclusively by women to protect their skin from the sun and add mystery through silence.
It was held in place by biting an inner button, preventing speech. It was considered a symbol of coquetry, elegance, and, in some contexts, social control by imposing silence.
