My parents had some old issues of *Life* magazine for various reasons. Many from the 40s and 50s had these kind of ads. I recall one ad’s tag line was “Not a cough in a carload!” If a person smokes enough cigarettes to fill up an empty freight train car, they *will* cough.
One of my friends, who was born in 1956, told me that he remembers smoking in doctors’ offices and grocery stores. My mother said that when pregnant women were gaining too much weight, their doctors advised them to smoke *more.* It’s fortunate for us that the smell of smoke made her queasy when she was pregnant.

Dick Haymes died from lung cancer, Ralph Bellamy from a “lung ailment”.
