Interestingly, wolves weren’t our hunting partners at first, they were more of a warning system and level of protection against other predators, including other wolves. Basically we gave the least aggressive wolves our food scraps and a warm fire and in return they borked and grrrred when anything was amiss. So “guard dog” is technically the oldest pup professional, predating even “hunting dog”.
