    1. He’s looking for the packet drawer to confiscate hot sauce aka weapons of ass destruction

    2. With how well known the talibans tactics of hiding among civilians are this shouldn’t be a surprising image.

Plus there were lots of cases of retrieved weapons and plans from seemingly ordinary houses.

and traps, we lost a lot of guys to traps and surprise attacks from cornered members of the taliban

    3. In 2006 they would have been looking for small arms or IED parts used in the insurgency or sectarian militias

Little known fact, Rumsfeld had been tipped off that Saddam was buying bleach and vinegar in bulk at Costco.

    5. Just looks like it was probably a gag taken from the onion circa that time, not a legit caption…

At that point in time, they weren’t looking for WMDs, they were doing a general search for insurgency implications (weapons, documents, explosives, electronic devices, etc.).

    7. As a veteran, it’s more likely they were looking for illegal firearms or explosives. The citizens are legally allowed to own one firearm per home for home defense. We regularly found a lot of extra munitions and weapons when we had cause to search homes, though rarely were they being stockpiled in a malicious way. Usually they were hand-me-downs from family members or leftovers from the previous wars in the region.

Not that it is relevant but- This sub is weird ong, it has multiple personality disorder, one day its Republicans fucking around here, next it is the liberals jumping about, some time ago it was the socialist enjoyers, other day it is the caliphate/Roman/Byzantine/more empires lovers, tomorrow it will be the crusader fanboys, and sometimes its everyone at the same arguing about, i mean it really depends on the subject being discussed. Its really more diverse than i thought, but it is mostly European/American centric- which is understandable.

I forgot to add the world wars people – there are plenty of them too.

That is not how looting is done, use your brain. No one would loot a kitchen cabinet before any more valuable things and without a sack to put stolen items.

In case if you wonder how looting is done and how is life around occupying evil, I can tell. My house was in occupation and if russian withdrawal happened a few hours later, there would be a massacre in a village store nearby

    10. How many Americans keep a gun in the kitchen cupboard? Probably not unusual, but not common

To add further context, US troops couldn’t just run in any house after awhile, you had to have verifiable intelligence that the house was used to plan attacks, was used as weapons storage, etc.

In order to search the house, you have to collect all inhabitants and secure them in one spot under guard for everyone’s safety, including the people’s house you’re in. That way they were secured and had unofficial witnesses in case something illegal or morally wrong was done to them. Plus you’re a lot less likely to do something reckless when you’re surrounded by soldiers.

Not saying we were perfect far from it. I had more senior soldiers and NCOs who were in during the Surge, and we definitely skirted due process with this stuff. We also deliberately played psychological warfare during these searches. We’d raid most of these houses in the dead of night. If the man of the house was suspected of being or aiding an insurgent, we’d arrest him in front of his wife and children to immasculate him. Might not sound that bad to us, but their culture is VERY patriarchal and honor-bound. Having dudes run up in your house and make you subservient in front of your family was a horrible shame.

The idea was intimidation. Basically showing Iraqis this was the consequence of aiding insurgents. But we fucked up a lot, and a lot of innocents were caught up in this, which ironically led to creating more insurgents.
