It’s the dragging and pushing effect the right hand thumb does when pushing the buttons.

The 6 and 9 are pushed straight down while every other number and enter are pushed while the thumb is moving in a direction other than straight down.

    2. I shop at this grocery store. Schnucks – you can see the name on the far right side. It’s a local chain in the St. Louis area. If you enter your phone number on the keypad when checking out, you get a percentage back to get cash off future groceries. The area codes common around here are 314, 636, 573, and 618.

So no idea why that 6 is in such good shape. Unless they replaced just the number 6 from having worn out, and kept the rest of the keypad in service.

Edit: also having shopped on the east side in Belleville and Alton, in the city, in the county, and in St. Charles – I’ve never seen one of their keypads look this rough.

    3. Most people are right handed, and most people use their pointer finger on keypads.

That leads them to favour picking numbers on the upper left hand side of the keypad. As those are the easiest to press.

      See how 0, 9, 8, and 6 are all less pressed than 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7
