Wow, this looks amazing! How does ice like this form?

Hair ice is a type of ice that forms on dead, barkless hardwood, resembling fine, silky hairs. It forms under specific conditions: the presence of the fungus Exidiopsis effusa, moist air, temperatures slightly below 0°C (32°F), and typically occurs on broadleaf trees between latitudes 45°N and 55°N. The fungus causes “ice segregation,” where freezing water in the wood creates a barrier, trapping liquid. This generates suction, pushing water to the ice’s edge, where it freezes and extends outward, forming thin ice strands about 0.01 mm in diameter. The fungus also contains an inhibitor that stabilizes the ice strands, allowing the hair ice to retain its shape for several hours. Examples of locations where hair ice has been observed include the Lime Kiln Trail near Granite Falls and Federation Forest State Park near Enumclaw, Washington.
