To all the haters, it’s not that bad a city. Clean, zero crime, very multi-cultural along with all the food options that brings for eating out. Would I move there? Probably not but it’s a damn sight nice than Dubai

Nobody here has ever been there and it shows

Lived there for 7 years, the safest place I lived. Those who say soulless knows shit. They’ve never been there and think just because there are tall buildings they are all dubai.
Abu dhabi is significantly different from dubai. The fancy areas of abu dhabi, tall buildings etc are a very small piece of AD that it is probably as big as 1/4 of manhattan while AD is as big as half of NY state.
You wanna have authenticity? Next to the tallest building, World Trade Center, you can find the old market. Around that area, there are so many south east asians (makes it authentic for you guys). The streets are crowded there yet quite clean.
None of the locals live around these areas, they are all far from here, living in their houses/villas (government/state provides when two locals marry).

An older gent I knew used to say “Abu Dhabi, I was there when it was nothing but tents and camels”. I always thought he was joking.

I used to love Garfield cartoon strips growing up and a running gag would be him putting the kitten or dog in a box and marking it to be shipped to Abu Dhabi because it was in the middle of nowhere.

And despite all the shiny buildings, bright lights and fancy cars it’s not moved on mentally, it’s still as backward as it’s always been.

Another day, another post supposed to make you think how impressive the UAE is, but as usual it forgets the mention the slavery, the complete lack of rights for certain groups – jail for homosexuality anyone? – the ecological destruction, and the obscene and cringeworthy obsession with ostentatious displays of wealth.

Though i dont understand why laborers went there to work in such inhumane conditions. After couple of years, the notorius working conditions were well heard and yet foreing workers still flocked to the construction sites. Were they kidnapped or something else maybe?
