Annette Kellerman challenged societal norms and fought for women’s freedom to wear what they chose even in 1907

It’s funny how time changes people. A while back, having your nudes leaked was the end of the world for some people. After much negligence from the authorities and many people continuing to live their lives despite this, today sending nudes is part of dating.

It is wild how something so modest by today’s standards was considered a criminal offense back then.

She died in 1975 (at 89) so she was arrested for wearing a fitted sleeveless one-piece but lived long enough to see designer Rudi Gernreich popularize the thong bikini in the 1970s. She live through and experienced so many changes to the world.

      She’s so interesting!!!

Was an Australian swimmer who performed in vaudeville doing crazy dives and had her own line of swimwear. Made a few silent film appearances, one of which was fully nude but the film is lost, called Daughter of the Gods.

IIRC she was even called “the perfect woman” because of her athletic body and her beauty

Over a hundred years later, we have people losing their minds over what fictional characters wear and trying to censor them.

She seems like a right champ, but the title may not be 100% accurate. This is from her Wiki:

According to an Australian magazine, “In the early 1900s, women were expected to wear cumbersome dress and pantaloon combinations when swimming.” Although Kellermann later claimed to have been arrested at Revere Beach for public indecency while wearing one of her suits, there are no contemporary police records or news stories corroborating this, and she appears to have invented the incident.
