    1. Context: so the Grand Alliance (Britain, United Provinces, and the Habsburgs) had managed to keep France at bay through most its hegemony (1659-1759). After the Diplomatic Revolution, Britain and France swapped their German partners, and Prussia immediately got into trouble, surrounded by an alliance of France, Austria, and Russia. For the first portion of the Seven Years War the Brits had to be pulling their hair out.
