oh wow, that is scary, I honestly first thought its a Sim rig steering wheel. I am never buying a new car.. give something from the 80s please.

Another reason to try to buy used cars from like 15 years or so ago. Little to no software that will cause glitches or rob you of your privacy for your car manufacturer’s profit.

Sounds like it happens while stationary. Surprisingly poor software/control system.
“BMW is launching a voluntary safety recall covering certain 2025–2026 BMW X3 models after identifying a software weakness in the steering system that, in rare cases, can lead to unintended steering wheel movement *while the vehicle is stationary*”

Glad I got rid of my Beamer years ago. Drove it new off the lot in 2018 and it had nothing but problems

My sister has an X3. Once the (electric) power steering quit just as she exited the highway; then kicked pack in a couple seconds later. So steering went from soft to hard back to soft all while cornering at high speed. Lucky she and her family weren’t hurt.
Turned out some of the wires pass through the wheel well and corroded.
It’s not just BMW; my wife’s Volvo main computer died while on a trip in November. $3,000 repair. Then the car threw a temper again on Christmas eve. We’re now shopping for a new vehicle.
The sad part is, modern engines are incredibly reliable, modern car bodies resist corrosion well, it’s the computers that don’t last.

What’s amazing to me is that software engineering interviews have gotten way harder in the past several years, but somehow you still get those large companies turning out this kind of dogshit software.

Driver missed to sign up for the steering wheel subscription?

We lost all sense when we made the wheel be driven by the software and not the other way around.
Power ASSISTED steering is fine. It can’t overrule you. It can only make things as TOUGH TO TURN AS THEY WOULD BE without power steering.
Same with ABS/braking.
But the day we let the computer actually move the steering wheel (e.g. lane control, automated parking, etc.) we totally fucked up.
There are some things where it doesn’t matter, for instance the speedo in many cars is actually software-driven based on a sensor and then the software moves the needle. It’s fine, because it doesn’t really matter.
But when it’s a core control of driving, then no. The software shouldn’t be able to move the wheel, no matter what happens.
We fucked up and we need to jump back 10 years and do it again, properly.

Remember when parts in a car worked mechanical and would once break in a decade or even never?
Well get ready for vibe coded software that steers the mechanical parts in your car.
