Advertising exec. : “OK, we got the Virginia Slims account, I know we’re selling death, but we need to come up with something sophisticated and feminine”

Advertising copywriter : “Alright boss, feeling pretty pleased with this, try it on for size: “Virginia Slims: Slimmer than the fat cigarettes men smoke””.

Advertising exec. : “You’re a goddamn genius, let’s run with it”!

    2. My mother tried to smoke “Eve”, a competing brand that was also marketed to women, but in the early- to mid-70s. She really just bought the cigarettes to get the flowered-paper packages. After a couple of weeks, she got tired of smoking, and stopped. It was the only time that I knew her to smoke…tobacco (the Devil’s lettuce was a different thing).
