Eh, their civilization (not necessarily the vikings out doing their thing, but the Norse cultures in Scandinavia) was a lot more gender-egalitarian than near-peer civilizations outside Scandinavia, which is probably more of what someone making that claim means. We’re talking things like women being able to own property, including businesses, and initiate divorce, which was pretty advanced for the time, but it’d be nothing like the kind of equality you’d see in, say, modern Denmark or Sweden.

Well to be fair, every army indulged in looting, raping, killing and maiming, you’d be hard pressed to find no one was innocent in the army, they thought they were entitled to such things as a bonus of being a soldier
