No, this is true. People are romanticizing it but nobody enjoyed it when it happened.

If you think about it deep enough, every year would suck. Since life has its ups and downs and most miserable people like to look at their downs more.
Its all about your perspective if you look at all the good thats happened that year you can finally be happy knowing youve done well and move on to the next year not in misery but in fulfillment that even if you havent achieved something in the previous year, You better try your best in this one.

2008 was worse than 2016.  2014 it seems where everything started to go downhill fast.

    4. 2016 really was a rollercoaster, but hindsight makes it seem like we were living in a bubble.

    5. 2016 sucked, and was the beginning of the noticeable downturn. Everyone I know is nostalgic for 2010 to 2015. 2008 to 2009 also weren’t so great, so it’s just that little bit in the middle.

I was young, in love, and stupid. I believed my dreams would come true if I worked hard enough. Now I know it is a lie people tell to themselves to feel better. I am tired and alone. Life was not better back there, but I sure as hell had hope it one day will be.

    7. 2016 was pretty ok. I graduated from college, moved out of my parents house, and got my first job.

    8. Historical_Union4686 on

Well the job market was not amazing at the time from what I remember but it was certainly much more affordable in terms of rent and groceries

I remember back in 2013 people were like “maybe the world DID end in 2012, because LiFe SuCkS MaAaAaAaN”. Haha

Mine wasnt!! Easy job, girlfriend, okayish money, cheaper rent, cheaper food, dad was still alive, car paid off. 2016 was great…. 2020 was when the great reset happened

    11. This is very aging to think there might be people here who don’t remember that 2016 is when things started going off the rails.

    12. Uh, the quality of life for the average person was much better in 2016. Inflation wasn’t a shitshow, more people could afford their basic needs, unemployment was low, American politics weren’t nearly as bad as now, AI wasn’t around to spread misinformation at another level. The list goes on and on. The standard of living was notably higher for most people in 2016.

Sometimes, periods of the past *are* better than the modern day. Acting like a contrarian to look all smart and unblinded by nostalgia ironically makes you look blind to the basic details.

    13. Every year is the worst year. I still vividly remember people being like “2016 sucks!” in 2016, then 2017 in 2017, so on and so forth.

That was the year Bowie died and uncorked the universe. The Guild of Calamitous Intent has been running amok ever since.

Nostalgia can a powerful but dangerous thing that warps your perspective of history or history in general. Stop living in the past and move on. Make new memories by focusing in the now. I know right now is tough but we can get through this, we always had. Constantly remembering what you thought was the “good ol days” feels good in the moment but will destroy you in the long term, like Drugs.

      2009-2013 were peak.

The fact that was when I was in Highschool and had no real responsibilities is just a coincidence.

In 2016 the Internet we all knew and loved was killed and replaced with algorithms. The reason things started feeling bad all the time is because we’re being force-fed negative and emotionally charged “personalized feeds.”

    18. No, the 20s are something else.

We knew it was going downhill in the 10s, but we can see it live in the 20s and it going faster and faster.

    19. givemejumpjets on

bruh, what about 2011, 2009, 2008, 2001? those be some bad bad years, and come to mind before 2016…

    20. You’ll never understand how awesome it was to experience life without scrolling on phones. It was magnificent

    21. GrimIntention91 on

2016 wasn’t that bad for me physically, mentally, or financially. Wasn’t by any means the greatest, but it didn’t feel this bad either.

Reading through the comments, i can’t help but think to myself.., am i the only one that had a good 2025 and is ready to turn my back on the last 6 years?

I mean all the memes and shit…i know i had a good run, and i know all the reasons..but.. come on people??

    23. 2016 sucked because I was completely broke lol 10 years really made a huge difference with that tho

    24. Leut_Aldo_Raine on

Was 2016 the year with all the freaky clowns? Or was that another terrible year?

    25. Weak-Ganache-1566 on

Dear Redditors – name a year that you think didn’t suck. These posts are fuggin lame. “Let’s celebrate negativity! Unrelated, why am I unhappy?”

    26. KingOfAzmerloth on

Nah, it was objectively better in many ways. No war in Europe, no covid, cost of living relative to income was lower, and so on and so forth.

Granted, I am not living terribly right now… but 2016 was better.

    27. Plus_Word_9764 on

Exactly. 2016 was easily the worst year of my life. It was horrible. So much universal darkness.
