This seems like a good idea to me.
>**Beginning January 1:**
>All alcohol purchasers must show ID—100% of the time.
>Age based assumptions are no longer allowed.
>Judges may restrict alcohol purchases for certain offenders.
>Individuals convicted of an extreme DUI—defined as a blood alcohol content of 0.16 or higher, or driving above Utah’s 0.05 limit with illegal substances present—may be designated as “interdicted” and prohibited from buying alcohol for a period of time.
>Interdicted individuals will receive a special ID. Their driver license or state ID will display a “No Alcohol Sale” label across the photo. This notation is visible during required visual ID checks by anyone selling or serving alcohol.

while this seems like a good idea, would this actually stop addicts from acquiring alcohol? seems like it wouldnt be very effective, they would just need to know one other adult to get it for them.
When I was a heavy drinker, I used to wish I had an ID like this so that I could stop.
The thumbnail is showing a picture of a 10-year-old kid. He really needs to stop drinking anyway.
Meh, just bring your passport as ID then…
Couldn’t you just use a passport?
Enter dick shin
I think DUIs should be punished harshly but this is less of a punishment and more of the government controlling them. There is no reason they shouldn’t be allowed to buy alcohol and enjoy it in a safe manner.
Shouldn’t be allowed to drive, either.
Maybe it’s a bad idea and I rarely agree with religious fanatics but as someone who works in a hospital with alcoholics dominating the ICU’s and the emergency departments, ruining tons of lives, I feel like, let them try.
This will be very easy to work around. How long before we see our first offender? I say by January 30th!
What’s next? An alcohol offender registry? Let’s see how this works.
Ya’ll still do that “Ice Cold Bees” thing in Utah?
What are the penalties for bartenders/cashiers who violate and sell to them anyways? Are there any?
Sadly people will find away to bypass it, either with a friend or a spouse.
I’ve been saying this for years!!! They should also let people who are trying to quit drinking voluntarily do this themselves as well! I know it’s not foolproof but it would inhibit those with a problem from obtaining more alcohol as easily. My mom was addicted to the casino when I had my drinking problem. She was able to ‘sign herself out’ from coming back to the casino and was finally able to quit. I said they should do that with buying alcohol! Like blacklist yourself from liquor stores lol
Needs to happen more often. People drive drunk so much before they get caught.
So the opposite of Wisconsins approach.
1.6 per Million? Extrem DUI?
Interesting choice of headline.
I hope they take down numbers to see if any benefits actually come about because of this law.
Obviously, I would love for there to be zero drunk driving and zero fatalities bc of drunk driving.
I think there are these possibilities:
1) Law works as intended: there is a decrease in the number of drunk driving fatalities AND there are no other unintended consequences
2) Law works as intended: there is a decrease in the number of drunk driving fatalities BUT there are other *negative* unintended consequences
3) Law works as intended: there is a decrease in the number of drunk driving fatalities AND there are other *positive* unintended consequences
4) The law is ineffective: there is no statistically significant decrease in the number of drunk driving fatalities AND there are no other unintended consequences
4) The law is ineffective: there is no statistically significant decrease in the number of drunk driving fatalities BUT there are no other *positive* unintended consequences
5) The law is ineffective: there is no statistically significant decrease in the number of drunk driving fatalities AND there are no other *negative * unintended consequences (like creating a black market where other crime increases)

Any stat nerds have other possibilities I’m missing?
I wish I could pay a certain amount of money to have this done to my father
That seems fair
Going to a Victim Impact Panel should be mandatory on a federal level. I got a dui in the mid nineties and blew a .216 and that was part of the requirements. I went in there a cocky unapologetic asshole and came out a crying devastated wreck. It humbled me and I never drove drunk again.
If you have any empathy/compassion anywhere in your soul it will change you.
0.16 is considered extreme? Those are rookie numbers when I used to drink.
I wish they had done this back in the early 2000’s when I clearly had a drinking problem 🙁
Weird logic, I mean it’s not the guy being drunk that’s the problem, let him pass out on his porch, it’s he can’t be trusted *driving* cause he creates unacceptable risks to the others.
So it’s the driver’s licence that should be suspended?

I never get IDed anyway. I only go to one store and they know me. That being said I don’t drink and drive. I like to drink sitting on my couch watching YouTube videos.
Extreme…LOL the limit before you could be arrested used to be 0.15.
To everyone saying they’ll use a passport – won’t that now be seen as rather sus in Utah? (A US passport, that is. A foreign visitor would be expected to show a passport.)
It’s not the normal ID people use to buy liquor. Maybe the clerk won’t stop you since it iS valid ID but I could see an undercover operation watching for this.
This only works if they get carded. Most people older never get carded. A lot of drunks are older.
I’m…. Not opposed to this.
There should be a red flag law for drunks.
Why not suspend that license while they’re at it?
Heavy drinkers can honestly die of withdrawal symptoms. Cold Turkey can be extremely dangerous.
Yeah, that’ll stop an alcoholic.
