The Italians got so lucky that Mehmed II died when he did if I’m being honest (1480-1481)

    1. **Context**: so in 1480 the Ottomans took over the port of Otranto in southern Italy, and it was to be a toehold for a larger conquest, intended to end with Rome under the Turkish boot. However, Mehmed died and his troops retreated, never to set foot in Italy again. But had he survived, Italy was his primary target, and if we learned anything from the soon to begin Italian Wars, it was that Italy was ripe for foreign conquest despite its intellectual and economic strength.

Mehmed II: Any further and all five centers of Christianity would be in Muslim hands!

    3. By the end of his reign, there were a lot of people who urgently wanted Mehmed II dead. There is a lot of speculation about his death not being a natural one, but who did it? Nobody’s sure about that.

By the time of his death he kinda milked the Ottoman war machine to barebones, his son had to stay home for his entire reign to chill things. Doubtful he could keep going without serious repercussions.
