The Great Male Renunciation

No, it's not an incel thing. Ever noticed how Western male fashion suddenly turned from wearing lots of lace and colorful silk clothing to wearing a lot of drab suits? This is the term for that trend.

    1. Thanks for the interesting info OP.

Now I know what to say when I rant about why Men’s fashion sucks thesedays (Except 3 piece suits. Those are timeless.) Just need to accept more than just Drab Colors.

    2. Glad you put in the disclaimer I Immediately assumed this was an Incel thing. For a secound there I saw the upvotes and despaired for the state of r/historymemes.

Beau Brummell is such an interesting figure straddling this period, being the most prominent and powerful dandy in the world and dressing in black and white with a subdued but extravagant sense of style.

Given that guys probably dress to impress women, if women start preferencing guys with colourful outfits, it’ll come back

I’ve heard it was at least partly because of all the ash of the industrialization. And I could imagine military tactics and warfare having influence in that too

    6. Rejecting fancy noble fashion in favor of functionality. Sadly perverted through the glorification of suits. True humility is still not realized yet

Very interesting! Reading the wikipedia article, I guess the trend changed as colorful and “beautiful clothes” for men was an upper class, bourgeois thing, vs practical simple clothes is what an everyday working class man would actually wear. With revolutions the working class got rid of the upper classes and thus their flamboyant clothing.

I WILL learn to time travel
I WILL go back and choke Beau Brummel to death on his own cravat
      That evil twink WILL pay

That’s what happens when a bunch of rich people get targeted by revolutionaries and anarchists. It’s harder to play “identify the wealthy aristocrat” when they don’t dress in fabulous colors.

    10. I which colourful fabrics and different types of clothing would come back. I dislike pants and think they are uncomfortable. Also colours aside from blue white and black are rare on mens clothing nowadays in general.

But try to wear colourful skirts and tunics europe outside of scotland and medival fairs without people looking weird at you.

    11. Remind me of when Indian rajas odered Cartier diamond and jewelry, not for their wives but for themselves, I think king Edward surprised that males are more “flamboyant” than their females counterpart.
