Back in 2000, Kevin Hines jumped off the golden gate bridge . He miraculous survived because a sea lion was bumping him up and kept his head above water. Now he is a suicide prevention speaker.

**Kevin Hines**, at age 19, attempted suicide by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge due to his mental illnesses. He is one of the few people to survive the fall and the only one to survive without permanent paralysis

a sea lion circled below him, continuously bumping him up to keep his head above the water while he waited to be rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard

Only Kevin Hines could survive a jump AND get a sea lion rescue. Nature really had his back.

2 heroes. A sea lion and Kevin Hines both speaking out for anti-suicide. Truly interesting as fuck

People often avoid talking about it because they don’t want anyone to try to stop them. The sea lion was having none of that.

I’d be interested in hearing what he has to say. It sounds like the event changed his mind about not wanting to be alive.

    5. 1. Working to prevent suicide and sharing your story is great

      2. T shirts and messaging like that are really really annoying and feel arrogant

I don’t think anyone contemplating suicide wants hashtags with stupid social media slogans. I think the “ripple effect” argument against suicide is weirdly unempathetic and not always helpful. People in that position may already feel like their obligations are trapping them. Leveraging guilt on them about the effect their actions would have on others feels detached. What about their very real feelings? It’s not about pleasing others or preventing their hurt, that could be exactly why they’re depressed. What about THEM?

    6. There’s a fascinating documentary called The Bridge that focuses on the GG Bridge and how it’s a top destination for people wanting to end their lives and it features Kevin and his story. I think it came out roughly 20 years ago and I know a lot has changed but it’s still relevant today.

There’s no proof it happened other than his word and there are people who say they saw nothing.  He says there was a picture he was sent and it was deleted.  He acknowledges he was experiencing severe psychosis at the time he jumped.  He acknowledges he can’t prove it actually happened.  Even the picture he reports is described as one circling around him.

It might not matter much as long as what he does now is helpful as a net good..

    8. This reminds me of when I was young and ventured too far into the sea while on the beach.
While gasping for air and almost drowning, a sea lion bumped my feet and gave me a push towards shore. I panicked thinking it was a shark at first and the adrenaline helped me swim my way back to the shore.
Later people came over and the lifeguard told me that he saw the sea lion trying to save me and how they’re extremely empathetic animals that often help humans when drowning.
      Shoutout sea lions!

    9. Did they ever reward the sea lion? He deserved a year supply of his favorite fish, squid and octopus

    10. You know, I’m not a believer in God in the least. But something like this happens to me and I have to admit I’d at least have second thoughts about it.

I’d also become a pretty big sea lion advocate, but thats a separate topic.
