Context: In the 8th century, the Umayyad Caliphate attempted to expand deep into regions of what is now Afghanistan. Tegin Shah, the ruler of one of the independent principalities around what is now Kabul known as the “Turk Shahis”, was one of the rulers to face the might of the Umayyad. At some point after 717AD, Tegin Shah received news of the Umayyad military disaster inflicted by the Roman/Bulgars at Constantinople, and was apparently so impressed that he named his son “Rome Caesar” in honour of Leo III for his victory against their common foe. “Rome Caesar” (transcripted as Fromo Kesaro) would later succeed his father as the ruler of Kabul, and during his reign Fromo Kesaro successfully defended his realm from Umayyad incursions, just like his namesake had done.
