    1. Gregory IX passed a papal bull in the 13th century which associated witches with black cats. It is believed that this negative portrayal may have caused black cats in medieval Europe to be massacred or purged, which in turn could have contributed to the disastrous Black Death a century later (the bubonic plague was primarily transferred through fleas carried by rats).
