    1. They were star shaped because they were easier to defend. You could have munitions in the points of the star and 360 degree coverage.

    2. In the city Fredrikstad, Norway, the older part of the city was protected by fortifications based on this same shape. They layout is still intact and the buildings in this part of the city is preserved and protected for their historical significance.
