The War of the Third Coalition (1803–1806) was sparked in part by Napoleon’s coronation as Emperor of the French in 1804, which alarmed Europe’s monarchies and confirmed fears that revolutionary France had become an expansionist empire. Britain, Austria, Russia, and Sweden formed a coalition to curb French power and restore the balance in Europe. Napoleon responded with rapid mobilization and decisive campaigning, culminating in his crushing victory over Austrian and Russian forces at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. The defeat forced Austria out of the war and shattered the coalition. By 1806, the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved, and France emerged as the dominant power on the European continent.
