The blood falls in Antarctica: the underground water, trapped for more than 1.5 million years, contains so much iron that on contact with air it rusts and takes on that intense red color.

If this isn’t fake it might be the coolest and creepiest thing I’ve seen today

Dunno about that. Unless they seriously fucked with the color on the photo.
Water with a lot of rust in it is nowhere close to blood red. It’s an orange/brown.

theres an SCP designation about something like this

So, here’s a bit more info about the ‘Blood Falls’:
>**Antarctica’s Blood Falls was first discovered in 1911 by Australian geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor during the Terra Nova Expedition**. At first, researchers believed the red color came from red algae, but further studies have since revealed a much more complex and fascinating explanation.
>**The source of Blood Falls is an ancient, iron-rich subglacial lake trapped beneath Taylor Glacier.** The lake has been **isolated from the surface for over two million years**, creating a unique ecosystem completely cut off from sunlight and fresh air. **The water is so salty that it remains in liquid form despite the extreme cold, and as it seeps out through small fissures in the glacier, it reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere, oxidizing the iron and turning the water a deep red—similar to how rust forms on metal.**
>**What makes Blood Falls even more intriguing is that this subglacial lake contains a thriving microbial ecosystem**. Despite the harsh, oxygen-starved environment, **microorganisms have managed to survive by using iron and sulfate for energy.** This discovery has sparked interest in astrobiology, as it **suggests that similar life forms could exist in the subsurface oceans of Jupiter’s moon Europa or Saturn’s moon Enceladus, where extreme conditions resemble those found beneath Antarctica’s ice.**
>**A major breakthrough came in 2017 when scientists from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Colorado College used radar and imaging technology to confirm the existence of the underground lake and map out its hidden network of briny water channels**. More recently, **researchers have been studying the potential of this system to shed light on climate change**, as understanding how water moves beneath glaciers can help predict ice melt and rising sea levels.
>Because the water in Antarctica’s Blood Falls has been isolated for millions of years, it **provides a window into Earth’s ancient history, offering clues about what conditions were like when the planet was much younger**. Scientists believe that studying this unique environment **could provide valuable insights into how life evolved on Earth and how it might survive in extreme conditions elsewhere in the universe.**
This is a faked photo! Blood falls does actually exist but the colour is more brown like how blood looks when it’s old; it’s NOT BRIGHT RED! I learned about those falls on a YouTube video from a channel of a scientist working in Antarctica. The scientist debunk the myth of how these falls really look by taking a helicopter out and showing everyone how they really look. He said how many fake pictures and videos exist of this place and he wanted to set things straight!
( people who are on the last days of their period know this colour change very well! )

This fall is active since minimum of 10 000 years. The glacier by gravity pushed down on the water present under. Water reservoir is very large, many cubic kilometres cube. Water is a brine and it represent an ancient ocean body trapped. Normal ocean salinity is 3.5%, this is above 25%. Iron comes from the Antarctic bedrock there.

This image in particular looks hella fake. Oxidized iron is much more of a brown color. It’s too red

I should call her…
H.P. Lovecraft would have loved this

evangelion type shit
Heavy flow day
Imagine seeing this and not understanding science

It’s a real thing but this photo might be doctored still.
Gaah everything reminds me of her

Bro, imagine being the first person to discover this…
I bet it smells like a roll of pennies.
It’s like the elevators in The Shining

leftover from when GWAR was frozen there

This is just so metal.
Are we SURE that’s not LCL?
1.5 million year old virgin ice.
If this has never been used in a horror movie, it’s one of the biggest oversights in history.
Red rum. REDRUM!!
Isn’t it ironic?
Fake as shit image. There is a blood fall, yes, but this image is not it. Neither is the fall this colour.
Imagine seeing this in the 1700s
The Antarctic anal fissure
Interesting
I seriously doubt that.
