I mean some people would argue democracy never got to have a true opportunity in Russia, Boris Yelstin was far away of being a democrat… a democrat don’t bomb the parliament of their own country lol

During the 15th century, Russia inherited a system of autocratic government from the byzantine empire.

    3. Yeltsin is that drunk guy you brought over and helped who now wants to wall off the living room and kitchen and split the rest of your house with others like him. Who uses that massive moment to get absolutely plastered.

Gorbachev, what a tragic figure you really were.

    4. Tell me you know zero shit about the politics and economy of Russia in the 90s without telling me you don’t know shit about it.

    5. Russia took the easy path of dragging on the Soviet institutions instead of restructuring like Czechia or Estonia have. Institutions that were originally engineered to suit an authoritarian state, not a democratic one.

They also failed to meaningfully address organised crime, until said crime subsumed the state and became the oligarchy. They even made it much worse by empowering them by selling away public institutions.

Those are the two challenges that all post-soviet countries faced in one way or another. Some fared better, some worse. Russia failed spectacularly.

    6. “we have tried nothing and we’re out of ideas” sums up Russia’s relationship with democracy

    7. Sometimes I wonder if having a Marshal plan for the fall of the USSR would’ve helped or not.

      Yeah. That’s exactly what happened.

USSR desolved due to inability of center to create welfare. While maintaining equality and ambitions (pride)

90s gave people opportunities. But their pride was trampled. Like Japan’s in 1861-1905. And welfare didn’t came equally. Additionally to hardships of shattered economy.

So 20s produced nostalgia and revanchism. That with desolved, degraded and young institutions created things we saw in 00s and now.

P.s. Soviets main mistake was exactly inability to create democratic institutions and lack of experience in marketing ideas to public.

So this all became the foundation of events happening in 00s and 10s.

    9. The message of a meme is correct but there is very important context. Yeltsyn and his elite circle could be called democrats with a big stretch. They fucking obliterated the Parliament building from tanks in 1993, due to their beef with the oppostion. After that they rewrote constution that basically made President almost King and created foundation for Putin authoritarianism. And do not forget that they were so afraid of separatism that they escalated conflict in Chechnya, only to royally fuck it up during assault of Grozny in 1995 and later sign a treaty that de-facto recognized separatist government. Meanwhile the economy was so royally fucked that common folk was ready to accept any regime that would bring even minimal stability. Basicallly, the authoritarian backsliding of Russia is a direct consequence of decisions made by Russian elites in the 1990s.
