Because there isn’t a country called Taiwan. The name of the country, whether you recognize it or not as such, is “Republic of China”. Taiwan is just a nickname because it’s weird to call two countries China.

    2. To be fair, one China policy still exists so both sides agree that there is only one China and agree to disagree about who is the rightful government of it.

    3. Because, legally speaking, it’s not recognized by the UN as a country (neither as “Taiwan” nor as “Republic of China”).

If National Geographic adds Taiwan, they’d also have to add Kosovo, Transnistria, the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Luhansk People’s Republic, and several other self-declared republics that exist around the world, because those have as much legal recognition as Taiwan (aka none). This would get National Geographic into the highly political game of “Which self-declared republics do our readers like and which they don’t?”

It isn’t a country. It’s a temporarily separated part of China that is maintained with enormous amounts of money and weaponry by the West to be a constant thorn in china’s side

    5. Because there’s officially no such country. To this day the ruling body in Taipei refers to itself as the Republic of China and for decades vehemently held that they were the disposed official government of China despite the People’s Republic of China running the mainland. Neither the UN nor the US has officially recognized Taiwan, R.O.C. as a sovereign nation.

All that said…Taiwan is the official name of the island (or historically the Portuguese naming of Formosa has been used) so geographically that name is typically used and informally to refer to them politically.

    6. The US technically doesn’t officially recognize Taiwan as an independent country.

It is also worth noting that Both China controlled by the CCP and Taiwan claim to be China. The Peoples republic of China (mainland) vs The republic of China (Taiwan)

This is a move to kind of appease the PRC and the CCP in showing that we technically only recognize one China, at the same time based on US govt actions it kinda implies we never stated which China and that if there were a break away region, or region we don’t see valid as belonging to the PRC we might sell them some equipment at minimum. Of course, if you read the news, the PRC clearly sees through this but can’t really do anything.

    7. Taiwan isn’t a country. It’s state under the control of the Republic of China 🫡

    8. Is it under R for Republic of China? I had a dictionary that has all the world flags in the back, that’s how it was listed there.

    9. Because both countries are technically China. Taiwan believes it is the rightful Republic of China (ROC) while mainland China calls itself the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) and also believes it is the rightful government.

      It is very confusing.

    10. Today you learn: there is no country’s official name called Taiwan. Even in Taiwan’s constitution, its name is Republic of China- ROC.
