I visited the WW2 Memorial at DC and noticed on one bronze panel that petina on the dog’s head was worn away from constantly being pet over the decades.

    1. This type of sculpture plaque looking thing is called a bronze relief. Bronze develops a dark patina over time from oxidation. Areas that are touched frequently get abraded by skin oils, friction, and contact, which removes the patina and exposes the lighter, shinier metal underneath. Over decades, repeated contact polished the bronze on the dog’s head, removing the dark patina. Humans are adorable sometimes.

    2. The fact you can say “over the decades” about the WWII Memorial and have it be true makes me feel very old. Though only barely, it’s 21 years old.
