It’s crazy how for Korea everyone pretty much only knows about Admiral Yi, while for Taiwan and HK it’s almost always in relation to China and never about any specific local histories

they have been traditional Chinese territory for centuries. HK and Taiwan got colonized in 1840 and 1895. Dutch tried before Japan but failed so it didn’t count. Before that their history is basically the county or province history in China. A county or a province could never be a player of the history. It is different from Korea which at least is a vasal, kind of a player somehow.
100 years seems long to individuals but it is too short and minor for history, particularly for a civilization lasting thousands of years

To be fair, as a Taiwanese myself, Taiwan’s and Hong Kong’s history are not that long in comparison to Chinese or Korean history

Being surprised that everyone talks about HK and Taiwan only in relation to China is like being surprised that everyone talks about New York and Texas only in relation to US

Taiwan is kinda weird because it WASN’T Chinese. Hong Kong meanwhile is literally just a part of China the British carved off. Large scale Han migration to Taiwan started under the Dutch. It’s like if China in 200 years claimed that Singapore was always Chinese because look at all the Chinese people living there. It was just one of the places the Qing conquered that weren’t traditionally part of China but were claimed as Chinese by Chinese nationalists as the Qing was in its death throes. The superpowers recognized all of them, including places like Tibet and Taiwan as Chinese territory following China’s immense contributions in WW2 despite being ruled separately by Japan for 50 years.

Tbf Hong Kong was never an important island until it was given over to the British.
Taiwan has Koxinga, a Ming loyalist that was very successful at fighting the Qing.

Where does Mongolian history (or northeast Asian nomadic history) fit in this meme? I know Mongolian history is a popular topic on this sub but is it a popular topic in general?
