Actually in Scandianavia, lit candles is still a common way to light up your Christmas tree. When I was a kid that was always how we did it. Everything was fine, just don’t knock your tree over.

Obviously you take precautions, and don’t just let the candles burn unattended.

We still do, just only do it while the tree is fresh, have some extinguisher nearby and don’t leave the candles unattended.

They weren’t staring at their phones 100% of the time, so….less risk. I mean, before electricity odds are most people are in the one room that has fire, so everyone’s eyes are on it.

Actually, I think candles are safer. You know you have an open flame. You watch it and don’t leave the room while they are lit. How many house fires were started by lights on a tree being plugged in and on all night? Many more than candles

Huh, we still do that in Switzerland, never in my 28 years of life has anything happened. You gott watch that the candles sit on brnaches that poke out more, nothing is close above them and keep an eye on them while they‘re burning, that‘s it.

My great grandpa emigrated with his family to the US in the late 1930s from Germany). The family brought the Christmas tree tradition with them and were still using candles as lights instead of electric. It was his special job as the youngest boy to keep an eye on the tree all night long to make sure no fires started. He was an excellent story teller. Miss him much this year
