Well, at first I thought this sign served no porpoise, and that maybe they posted it just for the halibut, but actually it’s because they want the fish to sink, they don’t want fish carcasses just floundering around on the surface of the water.

Sometimes on Reddit people give good info, and sometimes they make jokes. Wow, that’s “interesting as fuck”!

    3. I remember a great mahi fishing excursion I went on and while we were cleaning the fish and poking the eyes out like advised, one of the neighbors started yelling at us to “make sure” we were doing this.

We had been. If he had watched us for maybe 2 or 3 more minutes he would have seen the guy with the filet knife clearly stabbing every eyeball before tossing each carcass in the water.

So yea, this is a big deal to a lot of people.

    4. People poke fish eyes out (often by a sign near fishing spots) to make the carcasses sink by releasing gases that cause floating, keeping them underwater for crabs and other sea life, preventing them from becoming a smelly eyesore on the surface, and reducing bird scavenging. This practice helps the fish decompose naturally in the ecosystem rather than staying on top, where they attract birds and smell bad.
