Interestingly, the Iowa town of Elkader was named after the Algerian resistance fighter in 1847. He had made a name for himself as leader of the Algerian opposition to the French invasion. America was not yet the Empire it is today and the Abdelkader's cause received a lot of positive media coverage in the young nation.
Over a decade later, Abdelkader was living in Damascus, Syria. There, he found himself in an anti-Christian mass riot, during which he led an effort to protect the lives of Christians. As a thank you for that act he received these revolvers from Abraham Lincoln.
