So what? Real life Harajuku doesn’t look like Urahara either. They’re not claiming to be documentaries.

was that a universal thing throughout their history or was it a specific practice during a specific time because I genuinely do not know.

Can’t really blame the animators for taking some liberties

Aren’t most of the anime boys there ronin? Not to be pedantic but…

Jokes but I don’t think any of the anime guys is of samurai status.

To be fair a lot of side characters in Samurai Champloo looked liked below

Um actually most of those guys in the pick above are masterless ronnin so they are not bound to have traditional top knots. 🤓

In real life long loose hair is disadvantage in battle, it might get caught in something, be pulled by the opponent, or just get in your face and block vision

Fun fact, the top knot was a practical, if goofy, hairstyle. By tying the hair like that it provided a convenient and effective pad on which to rest hats and helmets, making them both easy and comfortable to wear.

This is what happens when every writer wants their MC to be so different and cool and to be an edgy Ronin. When everyone is different, no one is

I think all these anime characters are Ronins, not samuraï

Silly samurai, I laugh at them with my powdered colonial wig and high heels.

Samurai originally started cutting their hair that way because it made it easier to wear helmets in one way or another and to be fair, none of those anime guys wear helmets.

This is exactly why they chose a female lead for Ghost of Yotei.
A male character with that hairstyle wouldn’t have any commercial appeal.

Hey hyakkimaru literally spent most of his life without skin, limbs, sight and hearing.
He is very new to the concept of having hair.

I mean, most of those characters are Ronin. Probably did not cared about the haircut etiquette.

Aren’t all of those anime characters Ronin? I still doubt the hair is accurate, but I don’t think they would have topknots either.
