Ordered a used book off of Amazon, received what seems to be a signed copy.

    1. I had a high school friend who would “sign” books in the library for kicks. So don’t get too excited.

    2. I ordered a book off eBay and got this antique copy in good condition. It wasn’t even expensive

    3. I’ve gotten multiple books this way. Mostly Neil Gaiman books. Because I make leather covers for books and some are out of print in hardcover. So the only way to get them is used. And apparently some folks don’t look inside of books before selling them online.

Also, I haven’t ordered any Gaiman books since the news about him came out.

    4. I had that happen to me once, I was going to an event where I would get to meet the author so I ordered a copy of their book, it arrived signed already. I still enjoyed getting to meet them though

    5. Happened to me with a copy of *Moon Lander*, which appears to have been signed by the author Tom Kelly, who had written the book to chronicle his time with Grumman, overseeing the engineering of the Lunar Module for the Apollo program.

The book served as the basis for the episode “Spider” in HBO’s *From the Earth to the Moon*, which was centered around Kelly.

If it’s actually his signature, then I think that’s really neat.

    6. It’s hers. Just look at Google images for Dorothy Allison signature and you’ll find several that look like this about the time of “Trash”. She makes an enormous D that overlaps with the Allison, and an enormous A that overlaps with Dorothy.

    7. I once ordered a book off eBay for preparing for a clinical psychiatry exam. The seller didn’t respond after I sent the payment and hadn’t dispatched it for about a week so I figured it was some kind of scan and initiated the refund process & sent them an angry message.

About a week later I get the book with a signed message at the front from the author of the book. I checked their eBay name and it was indeed the author of the book…

    8. Potentially you got a copy signed by the author or this is a printed signature meant to give the book some personal feel to it. Could be the author signed the first X amount of books produced for distro as a thank you.

Authors sign a lot of books. It’s pretty standard these days for physical bookstores to get their entire initial stock signed in advance to drive first-week sales, and authors who stop by for readings usually sign every copy that sells while they’re there, plus any left behind.

    10. Same!!!! I bought a Tony Rice biography… opened it up and it was signed by Tony Rice! Now it sits in my office as a display.

I had a leather bound copy of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein that I bought at a storage unit auction. Wasn’t signed, but it still sold for 4k to a collector. It was a second generation print. Not the original release, but still really, really old. Get your stuff checked out, never know what you might have. Lots of times it’s the children cleaning out their parents house and they just don’t care about old books or “junk.” I’ve found some real treasures at estate sales over the years. The older and more decrepit the house, the better.
